2/10
Callaway get's along very well with his foster sister, Isis. (10 year old
female boxer) he likes to be praised and loves attention, especially getting
butt scratches and belly rubs!
11/8 Overall Callaway is a wonderful dog. He’s friendly, loving, eager to please and handsome! He has mastered the dog door, but has had a few accidents in the house at night or first thing in the morning. He likes his kennel and will sleep in it all night with no issues, but when given the freedom to sleep anywhere he has pooped in the house a couple of times after we have let him outside in the morning. Still working on that one. But, since he likes to go into his kennel at night, that's an easy solution. He is left out of the kennel during the day without incidents, so he either is holding it, or using the dog door during the day. Not sure, all the fall leaves are making tracking poops difficult. He is great meeting new adults; male or female. My parents came for a visit, and the first day, we had several Sears technicians come to the house for yearly maintenance. He was very excited when their trucks pulled in the driveway, and again when they rang the doorbell. Once inside, he immediately would go to them and lean against their leg, until they patted him. Sound familiar? He is a joy to walk on leash. But, he doesn't like to drink from a water bottle like our female does. So, I will be trying the collapsible water bowl. He can try to assert dominance with other dogs while on leash, but never with adults, including landscaping crews in the neighborhood. However, he does a lot of barking and dancing about when I use the lawnmower or leave blower. He has made friends with the mailman that brings treats. Both Callaway and our female run to the mailbox when he pulls up. Both sit and wait for him give them little biscuits. Callaway always will sit when the treat jar is opened. But...We have recently discovered that he is a bit of a counter surfer, after he enjoyed some cinnamon raisin & wheat bread. We have not witnessed him doing this, and it was only twice when we were out. We are now teaching him to stay out of the kitchen while we prepare our meals. As well as move away from the dining room table, and not beg when we are eating. The counter surfing could have been because he was bored or because our house guests changed the routine. We recently had visitors for 10 days and he did great, we asked them to give their evaluations as well (noted below) **************************** From Foster Granny (mom) Callaway was newly arrived at my son's when we increased his family by 2 of us for 10 days. I was so surprised how immediately we were totally accepted by him. He is adorable, very sweet and affectionate. He responds very well to commands. I was so impressed with his expressions of love and happiness knowing that he had been in a shelter for 2 months and at this home only about a week. I loved watching him play - he runs around and has the best time. It was especially fun watching "hide and seek" with my daughter-in-law in the yard. In addition to his wonderful good nature he is such a handsome boy, with awesome markings. We felt very sad to leave him but he would not fit in an under the seat carrier on our airplane ride back to California. ********************************** From stepfather of foster dad Having recently spent 10 days with Callaway in his foster home, I have the following observations: 1) he is a very friendly dog. 2) he seems somewhat unsure of his surroundings, probably due to the limited time in his foster home and having to play second fiddle to a (much older) alpha female. 3) He seems to be partially trained, and appears eager to have his training continued & seems especially eager to please. I feel that he would be a lovely pet for the right home, and with some patience, would reward his new owner(s) with loyalty and love.
10/18 Callaway is settling in well at his foster home. He gets along fine with the dog at his foster home and has not show any signs of resource guarding. He has already learned the dog door to the backyard. However, he is better at coming in without encouragement than he is going out. More updates to follow soon.
Callaway is coming to us from a local shelter. His family brought him to the shelter because he was uncomfortable with the new baby in his home, for this reason he will only be placed in a home with older children 12+. He does not tolerate little ones crawling on him. Callaway will need an experienced owner who will provide him with training and leadership. He is ok with most other dogs and does best with calmer dogs that are not in his face too much, he can also be protective of high value items such as food, bones, raw hides. He is a mellow boy, loves his toys and walks nicely on the leash. Watch for updates after he arrives at his foster home. |
