5/24 Rollie has been off the Lyme's medication for a few weeks and is doing great. He likes taking walks and playing with the Frisbee in the yard. He is more comfortable with his surroundings and his personality is really starting to come out. He is a good balance of mellow & silly and is always ready for the next task - whatever that may be. On Mother's Day we took Rollie & our female Isis to Lilac Sunday at Arnold Arboretum, there were lot's of people and dogs of all ages and he did great. It was our first car trip adventure and he really enjoyed it. He still needs work with some of the basic commands, but is getting better. Example, he is better at stay than sit and will come quicker if you squat when calling than if you are standing. We have a fenced yard and he always "takes care of business" around the perimeter off the grass, he does this same thing on walks which makes clean up easier, which is always appreciated! Rollie is building up his self confidence, he will get food and water on his own without you being there with him and he is more comfortable walking by the trash cans on his walks on trash night. We will keep working on the dog door, he's almost there.
4/28 Rollie is doing good. He was recently diagnosed with Lyme disease but the meds seem to be helping, no signs of limping and he is eating, drinking and playing normally. We are on week 2 of leaving him out of the crate while we are gone during the day and he does fine so we don’t think he needs to have someone at home all the time. As for being the only dog, it’s hard to say. He gets along with our female and has done well with all the neighborhood dogs we introduced him to so far. He does like to get all the attention and would probably like being the only dog for that reason. If he was going to be home alone a lot however, he would likely not do as well. We are working on his self-confidence. It is very entertaining to take them for a walk the night before trash pickup because he absolutely doesn't trust garbage cans. He made friends with our postman, but, he is shy/lacks self confidence when we say it's okay. I think he really likes being part of a pack. Overall he is a sweet dog and just needs some more work with basic commands. 4/8 Some updates after our first few days with Rollie: He gets along fine with our female boxer and introductions to some of neighbors dogs (all smaller dogs; bichon, westie, min. schnauzers) went well. We took walks on Sat & Sun, he did pretty well, but does need some work on the leash. All his basic commands could use some work. It seems he knows them, just doesn't always want to obey them. Getting him to go into the crate takes a little work, but eventually he will go in. He slept next to our bed just fine 3 nights in a row and only went in the crate when we had to go out. He was instantly attached to Derek, appeared a little timid towards me, but has already warmed up over the last few days. Rollie is still getting used to the different noises in and around the house. We are still working on the dog door so he can come and go to the fenced yard when he wants to, for now he wants you to go with him outside and appears to want you there when he eats his food. Otherwise, we are building trust, and that seems to be going well. Rollie is a very sweet boxer boy. A little shy at first when meeting new people but quickly warms up. He walks well on a leash and knows his basic commands. He has lived with kids and cats and is good with both. He gets along with most dogs but has issues with some male dogs but not all male dogs. Housebroken and crate trained although he can also be left home alone with free roam and does well. Watch for updates once we secure a foster home and get to know Rollie some more. |
